Is your goal as a perennial of 2-3 year annual ? I've planted queen of the night. Loved the color. It started becoming more violet (well not violet but not as deep) over subsequent years. When I ripped and replaced, my mindset changed with tulips and I treat them as semi annuals - refresh them every 2-3 years.

@a1an: My hope would be something perennial, but I realize that tulips don't fit that box neatly, so I plant a few new ones each year. Thanks for the suggestion to think of them as 2-3 year annuals. Good expectation management.

After looking more, I did stumble across T. 'Purple Pride', a sport of the pink Darwin hybrid T. 'Ollioules'. A few sites claim that Purple Pride is the first purple Darwin hybrid (High Country, van Bloem). Brent & Becky's describes it as closer to pink.

Purple Pride is more of a lavender, rather than purple...but Red Impression has always been a good deep red...without the orange-y overtones of Apfeldoorn.

Otoh, Negrita and Passionale have both been reliably perennial, as has Rouge Cardinal and Queen of Night.

Purple pride does not serve as a contrast for pink yulips. I got 4 different Darwins including that one and could barely tell the difference between them. Luckily I had some Queen of the night left from the prior year and once they came up everything looked better. Since they are later in the season I would recommend Negrita and/or Paul Scherer triumph tulips which will come up with the Darwins but will have to be planted more often.
