We will build a custom home on our land. I have met others that have had different experiences (of course) while building their dream home. I need to hear your experiences/suggestions for building a custom home. What you did, what you would not do again and what you wish you would have done. Here are o other individual’s experiences I have heard so far:

Person #1 - Built a home and used a custom home builder/general contractor for entire project. She indicated the general contractor did not search around for best prices. She found prices for products, lumber, etcetera cheaper than what the contractor found it for. she felt it was not his money he was spending, therefore there was not need to use time to look for the same material or product for a lower cost.

Person #2- used a General Contractor but he allowed her to hire her owe sub-contractors during certain phases. The project took longer than anticipated and it was a lot of work for her (finding skilled sub-contractors for specific projects such as electrician, plumber, kitchen cabinet builders) and researching best prices for products, material, etc. She claims she saved lots money.

Person #3- used subcontractors throughout the building process. This couple said they had a lot of homework to do ( researching product and finding the best product for the best prices, finding sub-contractors that were a good fit for them, The project took longer than anticipated getting everyone to fit in when needed. Claims she saved a ton of money.
