Kitchen lights advise

I know I am far away from installing lights but it takes me a while until I decide so I thought of asking for advice.

Here is my kitchen right now:

The floor will be replaced with hardwood, most probably Somerset mystic oak:

and the countertops will be silver waves granite (not decided yet if polished or leathered):

Also I will add knobs and pulls:

The appliances will be stainless steel and not decided yet on backsplash, probably some kind of subway tile, light color. As you can see from the pictures, we have one light above the breakfast nook, and another in the actual kitchen. There is also a recessed light above the sink.

What kind of lights would go best in this space?

Yes-you will need more lights. Most of the finishes you have chosen are very dark. The main florescent light in the kitchen needs to go! Replacing it with a high hanging fixture that would go with the light in the dinning area would be nice. Adding a few more can lights would also be good. Under the counter lights for sure. They are very easy to install and not expensive.

Are the cabinets staying the same?

You might want to consider using a wood look tile for flooring in the kitchen area instead of real hardwoods. I had hardwood in my kitchen for ten years (nice very good quality installed just before we purchased the house) and even though I did everything I could to baby it and take care of it, it is a hot mess. I am currently replacing it with wood look tile. I have had this tile in another area of the house for five years and it still looks like it was just installed. No special cleaners or babying needed! Most people that see it have to reach down and touch it to tell that it is not real wood. It even has a hand scraped texture to the surface. It is also way less money per square foot!

Both lights will be replaced, the one in the dining area is one of those brass, 90's style and we hate it. We wanted tile in the kitchen, but the kitchen has no doors, and one entry leads to the dining room (second picture was taken from that entry) and one entry leads to the hallway, and both spaces will have hardwood. I think it will not look good if the kitchen would have tile, especially wood look tile.

Looks good so far. I think your lighting options are limited by the space of your kitchen, but I like what you've got going. The regular ol' ceiling light you currently have in place looks and works fine. A quick search and it looks like this will fit well with what you're going towards. Track lights also may work in your kitchen. More ideas are here in this Close to Ceiling section.

Even more important are the bulbs you choose. Be sure to stick to LED bulbs with temperatures around 3000K. Plus you can never go wrong with dimmable bulbs.

I agree with Jamie, definitely do the under cabinet lights. Good luck!
