Dying fiddle leaf dig- Shriveled up stem

Help!
I rescued this fiddle leaf fig from its previous owner in hopes that I could help bring it back to life... The poor guy is not looking great and it looks like there’s some sort of white waxy substance coming off the stem. I have tried to put it into more sunlight and I also have been watering it when the top layer is dry. I don’t know what to do! Any advice would be appreciated!
