Are you sure about its growing in 'deep shade'? The RHS advises a South West or South aspect, in the British Isles, at least. You could try seed if you can find a plant. Chiltern has it.

Other related clematis include Sweet Summer Love and C. x triternata Rubromarginata. Other shade tolerant clematis can be found such as 'Silver Moon'. I have yet to find a clematis that is worth growing for the scent since I haven't found one that wafts.

This one is known for its scent. It grows 16-20 ft. You can search Taylors' Clematis. It will grow in deep shade and its considered The Most Fragrant one there is. I love almond scent and its a great entryway plant for my rose arbor. It's gotta go up one side across the top and down the other side, so at least 16 ft.

Very interesting about the shade thing. Everything I've read about it in British sources says full sun. Perhaps our full sun is about as bright as other people's shade.

I think the 'deep shade' condition is open to interpretation :-) The Taylors website says nothing about that............only that it can grow in conditions most clematis would prefer not to, like at the dry base of conifers. But it will strive for sun to bloom and if planted in heavy shade, blooming will be sparse. COTW recommends full sun as do other published sources.

I grow C. x triternata Rubromarginata myself and it does not bloom very profusely in my partially shaded garden. I also grow 'Sweet Summer Love' and the scent of either of these is not at all strong......barely even discernible.

I once saw it as a garden escape growing on grassy sand dunes in Cornwall with no shade. It was smothered in flowers.

When it says Any Aspect it means grow it anywhere. Some do grow in the shade. It's not really that shady there. There's roses growing where I'm putting this clematis that grow on the North side with 2 hours of sun maybe. My flowers sometimes do abnormal things for some reason.

thank you everyone, and thanks for finding its sister plant. that plant is available and has the same scent and climbing distance, just has color on the edges of the flowers, its important enough to me, i'll take it anyway. i still have to figure out how to take cuttings on these plants. everything else lines out but clematis is different. all the videos i've watched make it look so simple; so maybe my soil is getting too dry or something.
