Orchard's Bumblebee Magnet .... ?take two?

last modified: 8 years ago

So at the most recent orchid show I ran into the gent who last year gave me what he had labeled as OBM. Irina informed me that it was most definitely not an OBM as neither the flowers nor leaves matched the official description. Wasn't emotionally crushed by that revelation or anything ... the plant was free after all and still rather cute. But when I ran into the gentleman I decided to tell him since he sells AVs at the AA AV show and figured he'd want to know. He felt bad though I told him I wasn't the least bit upset and just wanted him to know for his records. So he gave me another of what he believed to be OBM -- though he was now puzzled as to what it could be. Well this plant looks nothing like the one he gave me last year which has me wondering if this time it might be the real deal. With that in mind, I'm posting a photo of the cute lil devil. Perhaps this time it really is an OBM...

(This is a 1" pot, btw.)

Yesterday I got myself a First Class program on the phone. I was going just to purchase an update for desktop - but they do not have FC2 for Windows 10.

Anyway - here is the instructions: http://avsa.org/store-software and a phone version is $14.99 and it is current.

But I digress - it was just about how to check if Paul's new plant is matching the description and photos of a registered plant,

And sorry, Paul - it is still not it.

Right now there is a plant selling on ebay

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/AFRICAN-VIOLET-PLANT-ORCHARDS-BUMBLE-MAGNET-MINIATURE/162966135046?hash=item25f189e106:g:X8sAAOSwQSNanioJ

and it is a correct one. Registration #8479 8/21/1996 MINIATURE DOUBLE PINK STAR. MEDIUM GREEN PLAIN, POINTED FOLIAGE

Anyway - I do not have this variety right now - but I had it for years. It is not a microminature, it is a normal size mini - up to 6 inches adult plant, it is a double pink. Solid pink - not pink and white.

While I do not know if a plant from a photo is a sport or a mislabeled plant - it is not it. I agree with the group - it is very cute.

Thanks, Irina. :-) Wonder what the lil guy is? Wouldn't think there'd be a plethora of micro minis .... at least not like there are standards. Suppose it could be a sport, as you mentioned.

I gave up on guessing... You will NEVER know for sure. If you have a list of your plants - then you can recover the label if one mysteriously disappeared... happens all the time.

But I wouldn't go to this nice gentleman and ask for more named plants, ever. If a grower is happy knowing that the plants can be mislabeled - but they bloom nicely - that's another story.

Paul, re Those brown leaf tips, maybe Irina will advise.

Ohhhh Paul,,,micro mini's!!!! I love them! That little dude is too cute! I wouldn't care what its name is,,,,,I love it! (or them!!!!) Rosie

Brown tips happen to some varieties... regular repotting helps.. I suspect they are sensitive to the soil pH - and minis are supposed to repotted EVERY 4 MONTHS.

So - Rosie - if you restock your light stand with minis - you will be one very busy lady.. with permanently dirty nails...

ummmm......aren't they supposed to be dirty???? lol Rosie

4 months for micro’s, - I’m behind!! Irina, what potting soil do you use. I would like to move to something without fertilizer. We have a hydroponic store which carry brands I’ve never heard of.

I think that every area needs its own soil tweaks. I use soil from violetshowcase.com - and I tweak it on the top. I do not think that having a fertilizer preload is that bad - just do not feed your plants for a month, I am more concerned about wetting agent. Since I wick- this wetting agent makes the soil very wet.

A friend uses Promix HP with 33% perlite added - for his streps - I tried - and it works. But when I tried the same soil on Primulinas - they developed red tips on the leaves - because they really prefer a lighter touch on fertilizer.

If you water your plants with pure water and they still develop fertilizer crust on young leaves - then you need to work on it, If not - then not.

There are plenty of good soils sold in hydroponic stores, You probably need to add perlite to them. And watch for coir in its ingredients - we do not need coir.

Rosie - I agree with you - the soil under the nails is cute. But every so often I catch people looking at my hands...
