Woo-hoo! After such a long, dreary winter there's hope!

What on earth are spring peepers anyway?

I just went across the street, but they're not singing here yet in Plymouth, MA.

They won't be singing here for awhile, but if they are singing somewhere, then there is hope. Most of our snow melted today, so I'm feeling optimistic.

I heard them when I visited a relative in Essex, Connecticut, two days ago. I got very excited! All their snow had melted too.
But they're not singing here where I live (upper Cape Cod) yet. And we still have mounds of snow lingering in shady areas.

Oops, what a difference a day makes! :D I just now heard our very first peepers here on the Upper Cape. Hooray!

I believe it's supposed to snow tomorrow morning, so I hope they're feeling strong....

Thanks for the reminder, barrett001. I just checked and they're singing here too in Plymouth (Ellisville)! Not robust at all - a very tentative chorus - but a start. No guarantees for a chilly, snowy tomorrow.

Peepers are active here finally, not in full throat, but a few were peeping away in the wetlands down the road as I drove by this evening. When they really get going, it hurts to stand nearby because they are so loud. The wood frogs in the smaller wet area near the house are quacking away vigorously, having started over the weekend. I am 15 miles north of Concord, NH.

I keep forgetting to listen but local friends on facebook have reported hearing them. What's going to happen on Sunday when it gets a lot colder again?

defrost, when we have a cold period they just hunker down in the mud at the bottom of the wetland and it gets quiet again until the weather warms up. Their metabolism is slow in the cold and they can absorb some oxygen via their skin from the water, so they are fine.

Yesterday's warmth here brought them out full force, and even though it is better than 1/8 of a mile from the house to the wetland, they were still loud. What I always wonder about is why the wet spot by the house only has wood frogs, while the wet spot down the road gets peepers, but no wood frogs. There must be some environmental difference that makes the two spots differently attractive to the two species.

Still no peepers in my So. Maine pond. We have had a few warmer days, but that hasn't brought them out yet. This weekend's weather won't help either! :0(

Wow, some of your peepers got an early start! I heard my first ones Thursday evening (4/12). Was so glad to hear them. Maybe there really will be an end to winter this year after all!
