Why built-ins? Do you need the storage? Do you have a collection you want to display? What about console and lamps or art or mirrors. I like built-ins, they have their place but they dictate a room sometimes. Could built-ins fit butt to the window wall?

Thank you for your thoughts. Our room is very casual. We have four young grandchildren who visit almost daily. The room is very large and I feel that built ins might add a cozier feel.

We recommend starting an ideabook here on Houzz and then going through and searching for built in images on here. Find the ones you like best and save those to your ideabook. That should help you get started.

Joe, I was thinking of the built ins from the door frame to the window, but am wondering if a wall space at each end would look better. Yes there is enough depth between the wall and the window for built ins.

That should look nice if that's the plan. When they are not sandwiched by two walls, they can sometimes look like a wall unit instead of built-ins and that's not so great. .
