Best to prune while dormant. Depending on the fig variety, they can produce two crops. The first crop, or breba crop, is produced on last year's wood, but many people believe that this crop is inferior. The main crop is produced on new growth. If you do not care about the breba crop, prune in the late fall/early winter to shape your tree to your desires. It helps to keep the tree manageable in size so you can do the fig shuffle every year.

I wouldn't prune heavily now as you may lose a good bit of your main crop. That said, some people tip prune, ie, remove the growing tip after the branch has produced 5 or more leaves. This supposedly encourages branching and fruit production on the current new growth.

I keep my fig trees dormant over winter, so how your actively growing figs will respond to pruning is something I cannot tell from experience. I believe a cold, rest period is critical for the health of the tree, and for yielding the best crop.

I will tell you for sure, that any figs forming until the first week of July have the best chance of ripening properly. Those that start forming after that have less of a chance of ripening in time before frosts put an end to the season.

If those were my trees, I would trim every branch with leaves on them to 3 leaves from where their growth first emerged. When it is safe to put the trees outside, in a couple weeks, new growth will emerge all over the tree.

When these new growths reach their 4th. leaf each, pinch the tip out. Continue pinching out tips of new growths at the 4 leaf state all summer long. Figlets formed at the base of each remaining new leaf that began forming before the first week of July should ripen in August-September quite nicely.

Remember, figs love: heat, sunlight, and low humidity.

Fertilize moderately to lightly. Two tablespoons of calcite lime per gallon pot size worked into the soil surface gently, every spring is advisable. Figs do not like very acidic soil.
