My tiny blah bathroom

last modified: 8 years ago

Help me improve my old mobile home‘s 5x8 ft bathroom to visually update and give a sense of space and better storage. I can’t change the window size or the tight space by pushing out a wall. I’m not afraid of dark colours or mirrors. I do plan to put honey coloured vinyl floor planks throughout the unit. I live on waterfront in the maritimes and lean toward rustic classic.

Well, you need more storage, so address that issue first...Over the toilet cabinet?

Is that wallpaper or is it that covered wallboard stuff? https://mobilehomeliving.org/how-to-update-vinyl-coated-drywall-in-mobile-homes/

New sink and cabinet in the budget? I like this one a lot, from Ikea (plus it's on sale now...)

I think the first thing I'd do is remove the wallpaper and prep it for paint, instead. Then, as mentioned above, get a better storage unit for above the toilet that has doors instead of open shelves to keep the clutter hidden. And, as long as you're painting, paint the sink base cabinet and replace the hardware with something a bit more up-to-date. Where I would inject color and pattern is in a pretty shower curtain, with a coordinating window treatment.

I think getting rid of the wallpaper and painting the walls will really bring some life into the space.

Wallpaper must go. Too many dodads about....wind chimes? Paper towels? Declutter then paint walls and vanity

    I don't think it's wallpaper, guys..

Remove all decor, then install new wallpaper, new toilet paper holder, and matching towel bars. Do not put any decor back for at least a month while you get used to the new uncluttered look. You can add a second medicine cabinet on the light switch wall.

There are paints that will adhere to plastic and could adhere to the kind of wallpaper panels that many manufactured homes have.

Add storage above the toilet tank. Leaving room to be sure you can remove the tank lid, you could add the equivalent of a bookcase on the wall with a width from the exterior wall to the edge of the vanity and all the way to the ceiling. (DIY w/shelving boards and finishing nails -- the kind that don't rust)

    Corner shelving is another idea.

    http://decoholic.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/corner_shelf.jpg

A shorter wall hung version of this.

If you prefer a more modern look, you could add a corner box shelving unit -- perhaps not this complicated -- not this many different board lengths -- but shelving that is built to turn the corner.

Thank you Pennydesign and Sabrina Alfin Interiors. Everyone is right about the trinkety flimsy granny stuff ---has to go....thank you. has suggested. The link to updating mobile homes is very helpful and your suggested link for a floating white vanity to give a sense of space and use of pattern. Also smart is the drawer vs the cupboards. I am thinking I can install a curved extended countertop close to the toilet and a large mirror with its own elongated narrow shelf in a great piece of wood, which I love (I'm a rustic person). Do you see a large-scale wallpaper or fabric pattern that would work?

I saw a great use of a wall murals to enhance space. I am thinking a grey to work with the wood floor. I think extending the wood as the floor trim will widen it up. An interest/focal wall at the end under the window where the toilet is could be some kind of wood placed somehow. What do you think of that?

Since I think I am bothered by the vanity being so close to the door, would it help enhance the design or be too expensive to put in a similar but shallower vanity and make the faucet and knobs come out the the wall over the sink instead?

Please keep the suggestions coming. I love them. Thank you tons. Fern

Will you be doing this yourself?

I would study study study how to paint these panels..especially since this is a bathroom and will be needing to be a somewhat tough finish.

I'm not a fan of a focal wall in a bathroom. To me, there's enough going on in bathrooms anyway. I do like beadboard which seems to be something that will work with your aesthetic?.. From what I see, you will need to remove the narrow trim bits that run up and down the wall in order to do beadboard, but save them to reinstall above.

If you don't want to do real beadboard, there is textured wallpaper that looks wonderful that you would just put up and top with a molding..again, the trim will need to be removed to put this up in addition to filling and smoothing the gaps..

    ^^^^This is wallpaper!!!!

I think this with the vanity mentioned above would look just charming..

I really don't think that you will gain anything by adding the over the toilet extension of the counter. It makes the tank difficult to access and you won't add much space.

Let us know how it goes! I love small spaces and this will be a huge transformation..

Thank you Pennydesign. I love your suggestion about the beadboard. You are right about studying. Oh my..... I like the idea of a floating vanity and even one that is not so deep to address that "too close to the door" feeling. I noticed that you can install faucets and knobs coming out from the wall to allow for more room. Can't believe that photo you just sent is paper! I must look for it in my area or online.

The wallpaper gets painted after installation. Try Bed Bath and Beyond...https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/wainscoting-wood-panel-paintable-wallpaper-in-white/1060347831?skuId=60347831&mcid=PS_googlepla_nonbrand_homedecor_online&product_id=60347831&adtype=pla&product_channel=online&adpos=1o28&creative=224274220558&device=c&matchtype=&network=s&mrkgadid=558394412&mrkgcl=609&rkg_id=h-c7af00c11b3b7f801857668a697387b9_t-1523119594&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3-LSts6o2gIVjrjACh0GwwgiEAQYHCABEgLZ1fD_BwE

You can usually find a 20% coupon online to use, if it's applicable.

I do like the faucets from the wall, but that would necessitate through the wall plumbing. It will cost.

I like Ikea because of the sizes they carry. Very compact. If you're near one (even if you're far) I highly recommend a day trip. It's crazy but wonderful for any kind of smaller living "stuff"...

The textured wallpaper is lovely, but it is not hard-wearing. My mum did stairwell walls in a beadboard texture. It shows every ding.

Jennifer K and Pennydesign, thanks. I am now excited about going to IKEA. I have no problem with the cost of changing up some plumbing to get that way too close to the door issue resolved. You both helped me eliminate any wallpaper option below chair- rail line and to look at other options looking similar. I have a labrador retriever who tends to rub her body along the walls. We get lots of rain and mist, fog and I also live right on the brackish sea-water in which she swims and is free to roam and come and go....mud...black shedding hair LOL...so anything but paper.

In fact, I decided upon beautiful tough wearing honey-colored vinyl floor planks instead of hardwood. You can' even tell they are vinyl! I am wondering if something on the bathroom ceiling would make it wow-factored and cozier since I'm fooling no one about the narrowness and small size of the bathroom. I am looking for the illusion of width and breadth rather than height.

I am looking for the illusion of width and breadth rather than height. So someone with design skills may have the answer to the illusion of widening by bringing down the ceiling or something else I would never think of.

I hear you about dogs and water...

Honestly, I would get beadboard panels in your case...very very scrubbable with the right paint, will help with the width illusion, and you can paint the color of your choosing above. I think it's perfect for you...vintage-y, beach-y...

I have no suggestions for visually lowering the ceiling other than that....I just think that a color on the ceiling will make it rather claustrophobic...

For me, the key here is to keep it simple but with charm..

Pennydesign, Good photo sample. Thank you. It even has the same room layout as mine but not as tight. Do you think it might even look good to paint the beadboard in a sand or warm stone colour similar to some of the honey vinyl flooring samples I am looking at locally?

They have knots and imperfections in them to hide dog hair and wood chips, muddy footprints. I wish I could upload the samples I snapped from my phone because I cannot find a photo example of a bathroom taking the tone on the floor upward to the walls.

A sage green would look great with honey color...it's recommended here as a paint color to go with the sometimes difficult oak kitchen cabinets...

Just so you know what's possible, the "panels" can be removed and replaced by actual drywall.

Breakthrough paint from Pittsburg Paints will adhere to most surfaces but I don't yet know the longterm durability. Mobile homes have different construction from permanent houses so wall mounted faucets are probably more trouble than they are worth. I find shallow vanities do make a bathroom look more spacious. I also like floating vanities but I would be concerned about how to mount the cabinet securely.

JudyG Designs, thank you. I had thought of knocking out a wall going into my bedroom since my mini home unit is 16x64 feet with 1024sq ft. But the cost would be too much. I agree that it’s good to install a floating vanity. I’d like to install the faucet to come out of the wall over the sink to make more room at the door. That means I will need to have the pipes moved as they now come straight up the middle of the vanity from the floor.

Pennydesign the green is awesome with the wood.. I happen to have a green paint chip for my bedroom I liked called Candelabra in Beautitone paints. I also love greys with honey and woods. Not sure which grey is best with that tiny south facing window. We are in Canada. I’d like to build out a small sill or ledge under the window to put a small plant(s) under the window. All my bathroom linens will be are white because I bleach everything. The view you see is with the current tenant’s things in it. I like the spa or zen feel in a bathroom even though my style is rustic.

Lynsey Lee, thanks for suggesting a better paint and I’ll explore shallower floating vanities because I hate the door opening so close to it What has been your experience with wall mounted sink faucets?

Chiflipper, thank you. Would the drywall bring the walls in slightly affecting the square footage in the bathroom slightly? Are you thinking removing the current thin ones typically in a 1990 Maple Leaf mini-home or drywalling over them? Darn that all in one piece plastic tub and shower surround. I don’t like those but....
