I don't have any pics but last year I tried to use zonal geranium as companion plants for a couple of rose bushes. Sadly it did not work out in my conditions. I had to water the roses generously throughout the summer and the geraniums did not like that (my soil is amended clay). I get much better results in terracotta containers where they have good drainage. I had the same adventure a few years ago with lavender. They also ended up in pots. However, the same year there was a hell-strip planting of white geranium next to my office that looked great all summer long. They were thriving on neglect and car exhaust!

For the past few years I have grown red zonal geraniums in a strip next to my driveway. I had them between lime small hosta. Two years ago I planted blue lobelia around them. Last year I planted dark blue verbena. They did fine in the ground but I should have fertilized them more as the summer went on. I did fertilize them when I planted them.

I plant zonal geraniums in my garden beds all the time. They do very well planted in the ground as long as they are in well drained soil. Geraniums do not like wet feet. I have a narrow bed along the house side of my driveway with a wide corner and then continues along my front porch. The driveway is in sun and the porch side in shade. Last year I did it all in red and white and got many compliments about it. The driveway side held red zonal geraniums bordered by white allyssum and the shady side was red and white impatiens. The corner held different plants in shades of red, white and a touch of blue and green. I use four month fertilizer on all my garden beds when I plant

I've seen zonals used to good effect and also very poor all depending on the weather. The blooms dislike wet conditions that can turn the flower heads all mushy and moldy. I keep mine potted and thus can move them under cover when the weather is inclement.

Lilyfinch.... it seems we like the same flowers :) First roses.... then zinnias, then hummingbird plants.... and now geraniums.... your little girl looks adorable with the geraniums....

Did you ever plant these in the grown with your roses?

I have several planters of them that I grew from seed, but hoping to branch out with Zonal, scented, and Regal.... I would have to treat the Regal as an annual because they hate heat and that is what I have almost all year here in south Florida.
