So back in 2006, I ordered 2 roses from Wayside Gardens: DESPREZ A FLEUR JAUNE and ZEPHIRINE DROUHIN. Being rose-clueless, it took me a few years to figure out that instead of "Rose Desprez" they sent me "New Dawn." As expected, New Dawn tried to kill me a few times, I wounded her severely one time, and we are at an impasse.

Years later, I got a Zephirine Drouhin from Almost Eden (awesome nursery, by the way) and realized that Wayside was really wayoff... because whatever that other rose is, it isn't Zephirine D. So here I am, hoping someone can identify the ZD impostor.

To its credit, this mystery rose has been intensely neglected: shaded, unfed, unwatered (but mulched). It survives as a ~4-5' cane that will throw a few roses every spring (it repeats, I'm pretty sure I'd found blooms later in the season and thought "and yet she lives..."). Last year I moved it to a different location where it gets a bit more sun but that then got shaded by a fig tree (that's been addressed). I took the flower pictures below about a year ago over about 5 days. There's a new basal this year (yay!!), as seen in the 3rd photo.

Observations: The leaves are shiny and dark green, it has gotten some black spot but here everyone does. The rose is scented but I can't really recall its scent... definitely nothing like Zeph D. There are thorns. The biggest leaves are around 1/5" long; the bloom a bit over 3" across when fully open.

This year I started to wonder if it's a Kordes, based on those shiny leaves, but you tell me. What do YOU think? Thanks!

The colors on the photos are all over the place, overall I'd say the first photo is most representative. Definitely bright, deep pink, no red/orange.
