I notice another comment on the article claims they did the work through a licensed contractor and chides you, but doesn't provide evidence of such.

Even though I was a provincially licensed homebuilder, when I decided to do renos, I needed a separate municipal license as a general renovator. A few months of doing that was an exhausting lesson in futility. I love houses; it's just the people who own them that I can't abide!

Apparently they did use a licensed building contractor which wasn't clear from the article, however, the information I provided will still prove useful to others venturing into the field.
