I believe you need more color in the room. I would suggest you bring the beach indoors by painting the walls a very pale, neutral blue. Then, paint the ceiling the same sort of blue, but two or three shades darker on the color chart. Your furniture and accessories are beautiful and classic, but I do believe a bit of color is what the room needs.

Since this room is no longer the tv room and sofa will not fit parallel to the windows, could you...Put the sofa on the wall where the tall cabinet is now to open it to the rest of your space. Add a couple of swiveling club chairs which would be convenient for conversation to the sofa, dining, or kitchen areas, or gazing out the windows. Although, I am not sure how/where your beautiful cabinet would then fit. (Just a thought from a non-designer!) Best wishes!

I think that would make the space much more inviting.

I don't think you should paint walls or choose too colorful rug...there is this thing with non professional photos, they tend to flatten real space, especially background (in this case gorgeous view). So, I believe that your "walls" are already very colorful because of the live mural you have. I would just try to spread that blue accents with adding greens too, to deepen the colors you already have.

Notice in groveraxle last photo how the contrast of color actually makes the outside color pop more since it isn't matching it.

I think that the position of your sectional is impeding the full potential of your space. Several people have already suggested moving your sectional to either face the amazing view OR placed against the wall where the armoire is & facing your lovely open kitchen. I think either would greatly improve the sociability, feel & flow. Do give them a try & post photos!

I have a sectional that my designer broke up. What a difference! I have lighting and small tables in between for glasses, etc. Best idea I’ve done in my great room.

I agree that the cocktail table is very Asian. Something more airy would compliment the space better.

A rich rug with color will be the biggest, best change. Lots of great inexpensive ones available now so have fun choosing!

To RedRyder - when you broke up your sectional, did you use all the pieces? The only place in the condo that this huge armoire can go is farther down on the wall toward the sliders. There is literally no other place it will fit and we don't want to get rid of it. Will look for a fun rug and work on the top of the coffee table - I really love the teak and curved legs. I think I just fall in love with pieces that do not compliment each other.

Though not the same configuration as yours, at least this will give you some what of an idea of what sectionals look like broken up.

might want to consider a table on the side of the sectional. Thinking maybe a round metal one. Doesn't have to be large like this one in the photo.

mizsusan , wow, we are all enjoying that view ! I like all of your furniture and it’s placement in the room . I think floating your sofa ( which BTW, I love )the way it is now helps to define the diff. areas of the room . If it were against the wall it would leave a big hole in the center of the room . One can’t miss the view in that room no matter where you are sitting . I would , however, add a chair in the spot where groveraxle inserted it , for a more complete conversational area . As to some small tweaks - I would remove the taller statue- like artifact from the coffee table to strive for a more “ relaxed” feel in that area . It feels a bit formal and contrived now. I would keep things on the table low and pared down . I like your original bright, blue pillows on the sofa ( just less of them ). They provide a little contrast and tie in with your artwork in both the living and dining areas . —- Rug situation - I personally love Persian rugs , but also, calm, soothing neutrals . I get how too much distraction from the soothing might not be your goal . To compromise , I think a neutral tone-on-tone area rug would add more oomph and depth to the room, while not being “ too much” for you . I found one as an example that I wish I could insert like others do , but will just include in the hopes you can visualize it . To me , it speaks “pebbles on the beach “ .

You might then , also, add some sheers at the side of the window, in a tad bit darker neutral pulled from the rug - more of a contrast with your walls , something to soften the feel , not as blah as the color you had tried . Although keeping the windows clean would be great ,too.

Ps: Lucky you ! What a dilemma to have :) .

I would get rid of the fan and put a cool chandelier that you can see through to define the space and make it more intimate

What I see, is too many shades of off white floating without an anchor. I think a darker rug would help a lot. I would just eliminate the curtains. The decor somehow needs more continuity. Might be worth getting a designer in for some consulting. Good luck :)

Terrible time of day to take a pic in there BUT......started to break up the sectional and I really think it is MORE bland when you see the back of the off white couch. I think what I am going to try and do is get a chair and put it in the back left corner and move that plant to the front left. Of course, look for better pillows.

Look for a swivel chair- that way you can take the view in or turn it to the sofa for conversation.

The square coffee table doesn’t work with the angled sofa. The corners fight with the sofa angles. Try some bunching tables that you can place close enough to be of use and that complement the sofa shape. Then a chair to the right of the cabinet to create a conversation area. If you don’t want a colorful rug, get one with texture. It’s ok to have neutrals, but then it’s important to add interest with texture - everything now reads very smooth - floor, rug, sofa fabric, coffee table finish. The cabinet is the only thing that has texture.

Also, the room seems off balance - the tall cabinet is heavy and, well, tall. Would it work anyplace else? Dining room maybe (can’t tell from the photo). Then replace it with something less imposing and heavy. Personally, I’d ditch the sectional (sorry - it just looks wrong for the space - too many conflicting angles) get a sofa, put 2 swivel chairs over by the windows - I love them to sit and enjoy the view - then turn around to join in conversation. Then maybe one chair left of the cabinet that you’ve replaced with something else. Right now the room looks like you’re struggling to use things that came from another home, trying to make them work here. Sometimes you just have to give it up (sigh) and do what’s right for the space.

The rug is a thick shag which I thought would be texture but maybe not. I moved the sectional back to original position just over a little more, moved the pots on top of armoire, changed the coffee table top a little and moved the plant to the front. I put the only upholstered chair that I have in the house in the back left corner - really like the idea of a chair there - just obviously a taller different one......should it be a print???? Back left corner needs something else - can't be another plant, right????

Have to move the armoire down - you cannot believe what a project that will be - it is very old and on these tiny legs. Will change the artwork in back left to something larger and more squarish. Will get some colorful pillows. I think I may be on a roll here..... thank you all. Am I heading in the right direction?

I think you are. If there is an outlet, A floor lamp by the chair would be good . I liked the blue glass vase where you had it on the floor , next to cabinet . Your plant could go back to where it was. I think it was better in it’s original spot .

If you might move your plant back, you should decide that before you purchase art to go between that and the cabinet . A smaller piece of art would be nice on the wall to the left of the cabinet .Did you ever consider how you might like a tone on tone, neutral rug to add a bit of pattern and ground the sofa seating area ?

Are you keeping your rug ? If not decided yet , you should decide that before you shop for a patterned chair or any new artwork . If keeping your rug ,I think you should then get a patterned chair . ( I vote for a patterned rug with solid chair .)

I have decided to keep the rug. Everybody that comes here loves it - the thick shag against the shiny floor with the colorful outside. I am working on artwork and a chair and pillows. Before we bought the rug, we tried several patterned, textured printed rugs and they were just too busy for me. Since almost everybody has said a patterned rug would look better, please don't think that I don't totally appreciate the thoughts, ideas and inspirations because I do. Heartfelt thanks to all. The room looks so much better already!!!

My advice on your room.....the view is your focal point. Just a bit of tweaking to your room is all you need....no large colorful patterns.

Got new pillow setup for the couch. What do you think? After I moved the plant to front of armoire, moved it back to where it was (what a beast) but now I think with the suggestions of the better scale artwork, I will once again move it to the front. Rearranged the pottery on top of armoire. Forget the curtains at least for now maybe forever.

DYING I mean DYING to find a swivel chair and put the big rectangle pillow on it. I am just loving my room - thank you all SO MUCH!!!!!

I agree with iheart6 and Ted Bixby, to add a neutral, textural, natural fiber (i.e. wool) rug to ground everything, and it will still allow the view to stand out. Some high quality, linen large pillows would be great also. Then, if it does not feel finished still think about the natural sheer shades only a bit at the top of the windows, yet they may not be needed. It is such a nice space just needs grounding.

I love the direction your room is taking. I think this pillow would be great in place of one of the solid navy pillows in the center of the sectional.

Actually, I tweeked the pillows a little bit. Thank you for your suggestion. I think perhaps another pattern would look good.

Busy looking for a chair - just love that idea - really makes the room look a whole lot better just don't know if I should go similar to couch or navy blue. I really want to use this rectangle pillow on it.

I love everything you have the way you have it. I would add some artwork and more big plants--bigger than what you have-- one at least in the corner between the two windows. LARGE. Maybe Monstera. And I'd add at least 5 more plants.

Are the sofa pillows and taking down the sheers the only changes you've made?

Don’t leave the windows bare, it would seem like something’s missing, and you’d have less privacy. I would change the rug to some kind of darker neutral shade like a brown or gray, and get curtains that match either the rug or pillows.

To Sharon: The changes I have/will make: moved the sectional over, changed out couch pillows, actively looking for a chair - where I will put colorful pillow, looking for large art piece for back left corner, rearranged pottery on top of armoire, changed out stuff on top of coffee table, took down 'test' sheers, will decide on something for wall on left of armoire after the chair is in place and decide upon plant placement. To Brianna: I already have cellular shades on all the windows and sliders, I just never use them. Thanks all.

I agree that it would look nice, but there is not a lot of room between sectional and wall (almost 3ft). It would block exit out of sliders. Agree that wall needs something.

For light control, look at roll-up light-filtering shades in a light wood color (casual look) or another color. They reduce the brightness of light coming in without obscuring your view, and will minimize fading of your fabrics and wood furniture. You can select the light-filtering effectiveness. The biggest window treatment manufacturers make them. I have had mine for about 15 years and recommend them highly.

Room is much better since we finally got a chair - navy blue swivel. Moved over the plant and working on artwork (see

pic for shape). It will be minimal abstract in shades of blue. I already have light control rollup shades (see pic) and have decided for now no other window treatments. After we get the artwork, probably will try for a curved floor lamp in back left corner. Still need something for angled wall between sliders but has to be thin - not a lot of room between wall and end of couch. thank you all for all the suggestions.
