Need advice on stressed coconut

last modified: 8 years ago

I thought my coconut was out of the woods after the damaging freeze (4 hours @ 28F) when it started growing again in just a couple weeks. Now it is showing signs of complications or stress. New fronds are wilting and necrosis appearing. Likely either cold damage, nutrient deficiency, or some fungus (lethal or non-lethal unknown). I will say it tends to get a little nutrient stress every winter/spring. Florida soils are terrible for Mn and K. I soil tested last month about 30 feet from this spot and potassium was near 0. Coconuts also struggle to absorb nutrients when stressed by cold so warmer soil should wake it up a bit. Either way, I treated with a fungicide and added K to the soil today.

First pic is end of Feb and the rest are from today. In the 2nd pic, you can see the far right and far left fronds, although very green, are wilting. The right one is almost in a "U" shape.

newer frond is very green but wilted (almost bent like a "U")

lots of spotting near the crown and on youngest fronds

emerging spear is very firm but you can see spotting in the tissue

Any advice is appreciated.
