GN Builders - DH is taking care of the removal and getting rid of existing doors and motors (quoted as 300 total). I still have sticker shock at the $8650 total.

When you say oversize, are you referring to the 3" thickness? The 9x7 is very standard in our area.

My quote for their mahogany door no overlays in a custom size, 8x8 plus two keyless door opener, $350, and install was slightly less at $7500. I have decided to go with steal doors to save money and maintance. My quotes for carriage style style steal doors custom sized and with openers are about half the cost. My garage is a detached so extra insulation cost was avoidable

I got quotes from amarr, clopay, haas and chi. I looked into steel -craft, as to beckystar's recommendation but no distributors near me. These companies all offered different materials and insulation ratings and had many carriage door options. You can down load their brochures and look into if you like their styles and then they list distributors in your area.

So if you think about it, $150 dispose of 1 door, good quality garage door opener and installation is about $500, torsion bar for that door is about $200... the wood door itself with glass lets say $2,500 with hardware and what else was added to it or needed to prep the door opening, plus labor for installer+helper... so that sounds about right.

Sounds right for wood doors. Both garage door companies we received bids from (over a decade ago) said many of their service calls are for wood door maintenance or replacement. They are beautiful, but require regular maintenance. They are required by our HOA/ARC if doors are seen from the development roads, and I can verify the maintenance headache since I live in the back of the neighborhood and pass the houses w/wood garage doors.

There are many wood-look options available. Just don't go cheap, or they won't look like real wood doors.

Also even though I do not need insulation I am getting a core fill for with steel doors without a core filler are so light and tinny they feel fake.

The Clingerman doors I am looking at are made from Versatex, cellular PVC, so are low maintenance. I saw a miniature door in person, and the surface looked great.

GN Builders - thank you for the cost breakdown, it makes sense. I can ask for the same from the company that quoted, to see if there's anything DH can do. (He's very handy). I'll also try to get a quote from another Clingerman distributor.

Allison0704 - thanks for weighing in. I have a (rotting) wooden door currently and do very much want a wood-look replacement which looks like wood.
