curtain suggestions?

I am looking for curtain suggestions to offer some light dampening at night for our bedroom. I am struggling with two things:
1. How should I hang the curtains? Should they go all the way to the top of the ceiling or within the door casing so it still shows off the crown moldings?
2. What color should I use? The paint color is revere pueter , with white dove molding. Headboard and bench at the end of bed are navy blue. The room gets lots of natural light.
