It has some potential. I would remove as much extra wood from the mirror, leaving just a framed mirror if possible. I would lose a lot of hardware from it, seems like an overabundance. Have fun decorating it. Since its free, you are only out your time and the cost of supplies if it doesn't turn out. When all else fails, paint it black.

Visual examples would be appreciated

1960’s…not good then and not good now. Here is an example of someone who tried:

I don’t like the white parts

Judy, how did you find a similar photo? What did you type?

Type repurposed dresser, antique painted dresser, vintage dresser upcycle

That mirror has to go, so I'd separate the top and bottom. For the mirror, I'd have a carpenter/handyman cut out all of the scalloped sides and try to take off those little ledges. The mirror can then be put in a variety of places.

My son and his wife obtained (free) a 3 piece set which has a similar look. Dresser without mirror, high dresser and night table, well made and in good condition. They like it just as it is. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I would take it, clean it up, remove the upper portion, and get a nice big mirror for above. You could replace the hardware, too. I prefer that so much more than new furniture.

Chalk paint is a miracle, google it.

I enjoy projects, but don’t need furniture.

I have a similar dresser. I took off the whole mirrored top piece and gave it away ages ago. It makes me hate the dresser substantially less.

Keep the mirror glass and removed the framed. Then paint the dresser and night stands or what ever is in the set a deep black, at SS knobs in a bar design and voila, instant posh....

This is one of my fave master bedrooms on Houzz and it is a tiny master bedroom; check out the More info to see the rest of this charming room, and all the black furniture!

.

If you don't need furniture and enjoy projects then do a project that's suggested. Then call a women's shelter and give it to one of the women leaving the shelter.

Not familiar with ss knobs bar design?
