Can Fruit Trees be Cured of Scab?

We have a pear tree and an apple tree that suffer from scab. They have never been treated before. If we were to successfully treat them with a copper fungicide this spring, would we have to do it every year, or would they be permanently cured?

I didn't know anything about this disease and was curious as to why the leaves on both trees would yellow and fall off by mid-August. The fruit on the pear tree was completely inedible as the entire skin would brown. Posters in another thread identified the problem as scab.
