I'd purchase two Clematis from JobLot about four years ago. I put them in the ground where their roots got some sun, but not a lot i.e. partial sun. They kept withering up and dying on me. So I tried Alfafa tea and cornmeal on them and still had issues. I transplanted one into a pot and it grows by our chimney and now is doing fine. I want to keep it in the pot but read in this forum that the Clematis wouldn't get much bigger if id did, it got to be about Four-five feet in height last year. Have you all had success with keeping your Clematis in a pot?
