Design Idea: Checkerboard Pattern Alternating Tiles With Groundcover

I saw this design online and thought it was incredibly clever. Basically they have done a precise geometric layout of square pavers, and one color of the two-color chessboard pattern is pure groundcover. What is interesting about this is that visually this creates a sense of formality in the design, almost like a formal French garden would use a chess pattern. But the implementation uses the extreme informality of groundcovers. I think this idea could be extended in interesting ways by for example using complementary groundcovers in different squares.
