So, like was recommended in my last post, I went to prune back the branches of my fig. They're very brown and brittle, and snapped right off. The cross section doesn't look like a living tree should, I think... The center is almost styrofoam like, with some brown wood and just a thin layer of green directly underneath the bark. I've attached a few pictures. When I scratch tree, it's green, but is it just that tiny layer? Surely that isn't enough to be alive?

I snapped a pic of the prunes off top, of how the wood looked, all brittle and wrinkled and brown, as well as the cross section of the branch and the tree at the top. And a pic of the base, where it is green if I scratch it.

I know green = living, but... It sure seems dead to me! There's a little branch that's been sitting in the dirt all winter that is dead that looks the same when I snap it!
