Help with Built-in Brick Shade Planter

Hello! We've lived in our home for going on six years now, and I have yet to figure out a solution for a built-in brick planter that is located on the front of our house. You can see it in the photo, it's located under the large front windows. It's a pretty shady spot, N/NW-facing. I would love to find perennials to place there, but I'm not entirely sure that's a great idea. Ideally, I'd like something that would add a nice "pop" to the porch area. I've done begonias in the past, even the large variety, but from the street, they look dwarfed. I typically hang a few ferns from the over hang above the planter. It's a work-in-progress, but any suggestions would be appreciated, from a novice gardener.

(I forgot to mention, I'm in Zone 5)
