new kitchen needs a backsplash

Finally nearing the end of our kitchen renovation! I know some people will sigh when they read another post about choosing a back splash for a white kitchen, but I really do need design help. I am looking to add some interest, drama, or color without being too trendy or out there. My home has lots of white trim, touches of black, with blue/grey paint colors. I think white subway will be too white. Thoughts? I am including pics of the adjoining family room and floor tile for mud room.

I should mention that I was thinking of tiling to the ceiling over the window and around the hood.

How about Moroccan glazed tiles? They have great texture and come in lots of shapes and sizes. They are sometimes called zeliig or bejmat tiles--check out Mosaic House. Here are some examples:

The black and white tile you shared is gorgeous but too much pattern for this space. Go with glazed or stone textured tiles in natural colors, particularly if you tile around the window. Use your black and white tile pattern for trivets, vases, linens.

Re select to a simple slate for your mud room tile, and use the cement instead on the back splash.Your mud tile and splash will be seen at the same time. One can be bold , the other not. : )

Or use a 2 x 8 white subway with a pale gray gout laid in a herringbone.........not too white or boring in any way .

Diana. I love the glazed tiles. That is the look I am going for. I just have to decide what color to go with. I thought about using the ceramic tile for the backsplash, but think its just a little busy for me. I think I will stick with the mud room and laundry room floor where I feel like I can be a little more bold.
