Paver Patio Question!

We are in the process of deciding how to extend our patio and just got a quote to overlay the existing concrete and add on 100 sq ft with pavers (extend to the brick wall)— so we will end up with 1 solid surface. Has anyone done this? Our landscaper is experienced so I can‘t imagine he would suggest something that would cause issue but curious about overlaying on concrete.

Also, suggestions on what color paver to use? Our house is a red brick for the most part... would we be better off using red or going with a contrast like a gray-ish brick? Or something different?

Finally, we were quoted at $7.50/sq ft. Does this seem reasonable? TIA!

Silly builders cutting corners. Anyone can see the patio should have gone at least to the corner of your house. Why do they do that?! Concrete is inexpensive in the bigger picture of building a house. Sorry...pet peeve. Like the mean little walks they put in. Lol.

That sounds low to extend the patio out like that (removing the dirt, gravel bed, sand/pack, then concrete, then pavers. If he doesn't extend the concrete base, you will always have an uneven seam due to settling/heaving.

Pricing is totally regional, so without knowing your location there's no way to know if it's a reasonable price. Here in VA, $7.50/sq ft would mean that you should budget to redo the patio when it fails in a year, but your local mileage may vary.

With the overlay, is the plan to create a flush walkout from the door? If not, you're going to have a trip step of just under an inch, by the looks of it. Make sure that detail is discussed and documented.

Whenever we’ve built decks, porches, etc. we always have wished we’d gone bigger, added more depth. I’m no pro at anything, but would you consider going all pavers BEYOND the brick wall, maybe creating a larger patio with a rounded, half-circle edge? Or even still a rectangle, with a pergola over the portion beyond the house? You have a beautiful home, but don’t short-change yourself on outdoor living!!!! IMHO, extending just to the house edge is not enough!!!

Excellent point above!! I can't tell you how many of my clients ask me to expand the dinky little builder's patios that seem to be SOP for any new construction. And if new builds, I always suggest that they increase the size they were thinking about by at least half....often as much as double. Few people ever complain their patio is too big........too small is always the problem!

And unless your landscaper is a very skilled mason (few are) I would never contemplate laying pavers over an existing concrete patio. There are just too many obstacles for this to be done correctly and effectively and join smoothly with the extension. It would be a lot less expensive and with greater opportunities for more creative shaping to just use concrete. Both the existing concrete pad and the new extension can be stained if you prefer a different color.

Yes! As gardengal48 said, I’ve never heard anyone complain that a patio, deck or porch was too big! Think outside that “little box.” !!

I would definitely go bigger. I had my patio remodeled recently, the contractor removed all of the concrete, compacted with some sort of sand product & then set in pavers. That’s how he does it, he has done literally dozens of them in my area & they all look great. My only suggestion is that you get the level ( very walkable ) pavers, also called ADA compliant, must more comfortable to walk on rather than the uneven , cobblestone-types.

Thanks all for the input! This is our first home so very new to projects like these, what to ask, etc etc. We are working on a list of questions for the contractor. If anyone has photos of their paver patio they wouldn't mind sharing, would love to see them.
