Kitchen Recessed Lighting Design

Hey y'all! My wife and I are building a house and we need to choose where our recessed lights will be placed. I've done some research and come up with the following. I'd appreciate your opinion!

The model home has 5 recessed lights centered over the L-shaped walkway, which casts shadows when you're working at the counter. It also has 3 pendants over the bar area of the island and one over the sink.

I've moved the recessed lights to the edge of the counter, added a couple over the island counter edge, and moved the two near the refrigerator and double oven out a foot or so since those wall/oven cabinets are 24" deep. Finally, I added a couple cans over what we're calling the coffee bar located in the breakfast area.

Blue = Recessed

Red = Pendant

Congratulations on creating a proper lighting design! Your can placement is very good. But the can in front of double oven is very close to the one over the island. I believe you can eliminate the cans over the island if you center the pendants over the entire surface, depending on your pendant type, light level, etc.

Wow, thanks! I'm surprised my first try turned out as well as it did.

Many photos and other resources seemed to indicate it was best to place the lights in a grid. Any comment on that given this particular floorplan and layout?

How does joist placement alter the lighting layout? Do you just adjust? I could see how joist placement could completely throw off the "perfect" lighting plan.

Many electricians like to place cans in a grid, for no other reason than pattern and symmetry. The most important thing to consider when placing cans is the proper illumination of the surface you need lit, and that doesn't always mean your cans will line up with each other. You do not need your can lights to form a pattern. A pattern will draw your eye more than a random placement, and you do not need to draw your eye to your recessed lighting.

The joists may alter your can placement just slightly, but more concerning is plumbing or HVAC, which may really force you to change your plan.

You can take the two cans in front of the double oven and refrigerator and inch them closer to the island. Too close to appliances and they can create glare on the shiny surfaces.
