Best Way to Get a Mortgate Pre-Approval?

Is there a best way to find a lender/get a mortgage pre-approval? My head is spinning and I'm not sure where to start? Is it best to go to my bank that I've been with for nearly 20 years? Or look elsewhere? We were not going to buy again until Oct/Nov but may have found a house that will necessitate getting a pre-approval sooner than expected and I don't know where to start.

The bank is the worst place to look. Are you using a realtor? Ask for a recommendation for a mortgage broker. Banks are notorious for not having th personnel to originate loans, but that's all the brokers do.
