What is "not very wide" for you? Are you willing and able to prune at least annually to maintain the width? Do you care whether it is evergreen? Would you consider a fence with or without vines and would that work better for you?

Atlanta. I would like an evergreen shrub for shade. I will prune it if necessary. Five feet wide.

Evergreens for shade are difficult, at least in my area. What creates the shade? Buildings or other trees and shrubs? How about the sun one - deciduous or evergreen?

Aucuba would certainly be easy to chop back. Takes dry full shade. Or maybe a smaller cultivar of Ternstroemia. These grow fairly upright.

Osmanthus fragrans would be awesome in the sun. There would be a ton of plants to select from for sun.
