sunroom conundrum!

We are right now in the construction of a new sunroom, which will be 13x14, mostly windows and a high bead board ceiling. It enters right off the living room, which is hardwood. I have found a tile I love but am wondering if it’s the look I really envision for this room. Our house is contemporary slash transitional and all done in grays and taupe with splashes of color. The area rug will be 8x10 and totally not the direction I was heading in, but I’d love feedback—yea or nay! Thank you so much!

You'll have more versatility in the room if you do a quieter floor and add interest with the rug. If you decide to use the busier tiles you may be stuck with plainer rugs for the life of the room.

It's a very beautiful rug, but it looks like a bit of a mismatch on my screen. I could picture that rug on a hardwood floor though!

Both are lovely on their own, but don’t go well together in my opinion.

which do you like better? the rug or the tile? what kind of furniture are you putting the room? your tile feels a bit on the modern side with a sleek type of furniture look.

beadboard is a bit more casual, country. I don't know how those two would look together.

what about some of these (these are porcelain tiles)

Since your adjacent room is hardwood, I do like the idea of a tile,brick, or stone floor. But the rug and that tile both have so much movement that they don't work together for me. Have you any inspo pics for the space?

I really appreciate these comments!! Thank you!! Now I’m thinking there is too much movement in both the tile and the rug, so if I stick with the tile, do I need a plain rug? Or should I go with a simple matte tile and a fun rug?

I say get the tile in (because it will be there for 20+ years) and then decide what is "needed" to accessorize once everything is put into place. An area rug is one of the last things to be put into place to "finish" a space. If you haven't started the space, it is hard to finish it.

I like the tile you have chosen. The rug is too country kitsch for me. But again, we won't know until the space is finished. I would wait.

If you know you want a fun, statement rug of any style it is wise to choose a quieter tile so that the rug can be the statement.

If you're in love with the tile, design the room around it though.

That's a good point SJ. I guess the question for jeanz is - do you LOVE the rug? I can totally see planning a room around an area rug. IF you are in love with it. If not, I'd start with the tile.

Haha I think that lindsey said what I was thinking, just better :) I think the bottom line is - the rug and tile don't go together, so which do you like more? (Or go with both and to heck with what anyone else thinks.... it's your room, so you have to love it! If you feel like they go together, just ignore everyone else. But since you are asking for advice, I think you've got to decide which you love)

Thank you, Ladies! Wonderful feedback! I think I have decided to start over with a quieter tile and a rug that I love. So back to square one! The tile is too “elegant” for my pretty but simple house, and the 8x10 rug is too much wow factor in a room only 13x14. Plus, they both have too much movement and scream at each other!! By the way, the tile is Jewelstone Ivory and the rug is Moonlit Pewter from Company C.

Plan B! So what do you think of this 8x10 rug, with a light grey micro suede sofa with chaise, light gray non-descript tile floor, all white woodwork, and a small contemporary accent chair in some color with same color pillows on sofa? The rug is going to cover most of the 13’x14’ room. Try to envision this in a room like this one. Again, thank you for your feedback!

Honestly,I think you went from one extreme to the other. "Non-descript","some color" vs. 'hey guys,look at this very bold rug and spectacular floor'. Are you sure your plan is formed enough to move forward? Can you describe the room you want in just three words?

Contemporary, serene but wow!
I went furniture hunting today and found a pretty small sofa with a chaise in gray micro suede. Finding an accent chair and a plain 12x24 tile floor will be no problem. It’s the rug that keeps me awake at night.
