You can prune a little at a time of the brown until you see a healthy white pith. How does someone living in a warm zone know that? See this fantastically detailed thread by Niptress (Cynthia): [Is-this-cane-dead? A-visual-guide-for-cold-zone-spring-pruning.[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/is-this-cane-dead-a-visual-guide-for-cold-zone-spring-pruning-dsvw-vd~3772241) I bookmarked it in case I ever move to a cold zone (one of these summers when I can't stand the baking temperatures anymore). Good luck! It looks like MAC will spring back :)

Thank you JR! I somehow missed that one the first time. totoro, I have the same experience with my young MAC planted last Fall. At first I had lots of green cane, then all the freeze/thaw happened and it gradually became brown. When I went to prune the other day the brown was DEAD!. However, I'm still gratified with the amount of green left given some of the cold temps we experienced and its position at the bottom of a northern wall.

I also second a warning in Nippstress' article that not all rose canes are green! I have many roses such as my Orleans polyanthas whose canes are naturally brown and somewhat gnarly, but have beautiful growth coming from them.
