picking out paint colors

OMG - what an ordeal. Sadly I am not very good at this as I'm sure many of you are. No wonder I rarely change my usually beige paint. I have to get rid of the gold at the place we moved into in 2015 so I'm deep into figuring out what to replace it with. I had the Sherwin Williams in home paint person come out and advise but I don't think she was all that good, plus it was a dreary day and hard to get a feel for the colors. The only thing she advised that I liked was the beige for the living areas - needed something that wasn't gold but would go with the kitchen counters, tile backsplash and oak woodwork. So I put samples of the Antler Velvet all over and I like that.

However the blue for the powder room and office is another story. Shortly after she left I realized green would probably be better in my office since there's no blue in the valance I'm keeping and blue just seems too bedroomy/bathroomy. So I picked out what looked like a muted gray/green and tried that. OMG - all these colors looked like aqua to me. I know I have issues committing to a color and maybe the only color I like is beige!

So I took the aqua green sample back and asked to have it turned into something more sagey-green. The sagey greens looked kind of dull so I got something a little more green. Well, I think that might be okay for the office. It looked like such a bright green in the sun but now that the sun's not shining directly on it, it looks pretty good. I may still try a sample of one of the dull sage greens.

DH is not so color risk averse as me and has a good eye for it so I told him to decide on the bathroom blue. The colors are relatively light on the scale but when I put them on the wall in this small windowless bathroom they look so dark. Oh well, I'm going with the blue he picked out. As he says, repaint it if you don't like it.

I was going to do some color in my small windowless laundry room but just sticking with the lightest shade of the Antler Velvet palette. I have a couple recessed architectural details the color consultant suggested painting a shade darker than Antler. DH thinks that's a good idea. Is it?

Right now I'm thinking this is the last time I'm going to have this place painted in my lifetime......

So post pics! Let’s see what you’ve got going on and you know everyone will pitch in. If you can post pics of the rooms when they are well lit and a sample of the fabrics you are keeping that will be a good start.

If you don't want to post pics you could enlist the help a "real life" friend whose decorating you admire. I would be flattered if a friend asked my opinion about decorating.

I agree that pictures would help.

Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, google the most popular beiges, greens, blues. Benjamin Moore has charts of tried and true colors. Sherwin Williams probably does the same. Start with those colors.

Other sites will come up like decorators favorites etc. Explore those.

SW has color palette cards that were a great help to me when I was painting my entire house. I loved being able to choose from the palette and knowing that the colors all worked together.

Well here are a few pics some better lighting that others. I do really like these colors but for adjusting to larger swaths on the walls. The medium beige is the color that will be on all the walls in the main rooms. The only places with fabric are the main living areas and I’m getting new furniture that I’m confident goes with my new beige. I do have an oriental rug that will also be fine with it. It doesn’t go with the gold. All the carpet will be replaced with wood - same color as what I have now.

The last three pictures are the places for the darker color - upper inside of the room with the pillars.

I love Shaker Beige! It was on nearly every wall in my last two houses.

I used a Behr Jojoba in my sunroom and really like it - it's a soft grayed green and very nice

Our cabinets are very similar to yours, oak with a tint of orange in them. I found it very hard if not impossible to find a beige that would play well with them. I ended up with Behr Raffia Cream and it’s perfection. I have it in several rooms and regardless of how much or little lighting there is, I love the way it looks. I think it or a creamy off white would be really pretty in your kitchen. Has that been considered already?. This is an older picture but at least you can see what I’m referring to.

Thanks - now that I've thought a bit more about Shaker Beige I'm reminded of a Gumleaf green that I used in the past . I think I may go with that for the green and keep looking for a lighter grayish blue. I have that at my other house and it's more what I had in mind for this bathroom.

Well, I think I've finally come to a conclusion after a couple more samples. With help from a great woman at Sherwin Williams - much better than the person who came to my house. I picked a lighter grayish blue (Northstar) and a lighter sage green (Grassland) in addition to the beige (Antler Velvet) that I'd already decided on. Put the latest samples up in the office and bathroom last night and I liked them right away and they are still looking good today. Glad I kept trying different options. I am really not good at this - overwhelming and confusing when you see so many choices.

My wood floor project starts next week - two weeks for that. Then painting starts at the beginning of June. Then I get my new furniture and the stair runner and then I'm done with this stuff for awhile. Still have to get rid of the carpet in the bedroom but it might be a couple years before I'm up for more disruption.
