We are discussing options to replace our deck. One is to build it back as a basic raised rectangle. The other is to have steps from the sliding door down onto a paved patio. I ran across some photographs of "combo" deck/patios and pergolas that I like as well.

Decks require more maintenance, but since we've never had a patio, are there pros/cons to being flat on the ground.

View from door. From door to fence is about 30 feet. If we stay with the current size/design, my plan is to make a walkway to the bench with crepe myrtles on either side.
