I used a translucent, obscuring window film in my kitchen......I wanted to maximize the light (because they're the only windows in my kitchen), but I needed to obscure the view to the public pathway 5' from my windows. I love the result, but I also had some restrictions you do not (I'm in a condo so I couldn't replace the windows). But the up-side to using a film is that it's removable and can be changed if you do re-style or redecorate your kitchen. This is it in my kitchen

Marvin has a glass option they call "frost". Very similar to sand blast or white laminated. Take a look at those as I think they fit your criteria of not drawing attention to themselves. These would also be available from Andersen.

Ask your window dealer if they sell a window without glass or one that the glass is easily changed out.

Some of the higher end vinyl offerings have some really nice decorative glass options.

Anna, I used 3M film, and I got it from, and had it professionally installed by, a window coverings company. They offered not just varying levels of translucency, but also offered patterns and some decorative applications - for instance, having a 3/4" outline of clear window (i.e. no film) about 2" from the edge, which I thought would be very nice in some applications. Kind of like this image I stole from the internet, but this is a double outline.

tknx,,,you could always do a beveled glass overlay. I did it with my Andersen window in my bathroom. had a stained glass place make the overlay, then fit it right over the glass with silicone.
