What is a limequat fruit like?

I have been toying with the idea of getting a kumquat (fukushu or meiwa), I think my kids would enjoy eating them off the tree.

Laura - I know this must be so hard for you; it would break my heart. But I also understand having too many to take care of and I don't want to get to the point that my hobby feels like a chore. That being said, if you have any Lemons or Mandarins on your list to downsize, I may be able to offer them a loving home. I also could come pick them up, instead of shipping. We drive to Maryland regularly to visit in-laws. I would just have to make sure they fit in my car.

You probably haven't seen my added collection but i will ask Steve if he wants a couple of nicely trimmed tree's only for postage.All of his forum friends are invited for this onetime offer. Steve got a lot of forum friends and i don't, guessing maybe one.

Lucky, I will take an inventory but a few will be too big to ship. It is hard but I just don’t think they will fit inside my house as they get bigger. I also would love to make some trees for my friends with my newfound grafting skills ;)...for the future. My daughter did not notice today when I shipped out two small ones. I hope she does not notice. Off the top of my head, I have a small meyer lemon (very cute) which did produce one huge lemon this winter. I adopted that one from my neighbor and although cute and manageable now, it will grow up. I also have a calamondin bush, possibly another limequat (Lakeland), and maybe a tall meyer. Possibly a cara cara bush and nagami kumquat, but I am still on the fence about giving those away.

Laura, can I ask you what ones you plan on keeping? Favorites. those worthy to stay?

I am considering thinning the herd out here myself but it's been a tough decision on which ones stay or go. You must be in a pickle. I feel bad. Wish we could afford a huge greenhouse with lots of sunshine in it(

I've been thinking about getting a calamondin but all they have around here are those Record Buck ones. Though they're probably fine, I've just read some negative things about RB. If you think you could ship that, I'd gladly pay shipping.

Mike, I am not getting rid of any varieties specifically because I don’t like them, I am just removing a few duplicates from my collection. That is a tough question and hard for me to answer since I have not tasted all the mandarins I have. I think the ST, key lime, and dekopon would be up there though...and Alexander (my meyer) of course. He fared much better this year and did not defoliate like last year although he did lose some leaves. He is coming back with a vengeance now...full of buds. :). Lucky, if the ones that can do a local pickup do not want the calamondin, I will find a box and ship it to you.

I hear you, some how I ended up with triples of the same plant in case if I were to loose one, and from cuttings, but then we don't loose any now that we know how to keep them happy and end up with more.ha

How is your rehoming process going Laura? If no one is willing to rehome one of your Meyers, I'm willing to give it some loving! Even if they are a bit challenging for beginners. My Meyer couldn't handle both a repot, root pruning (of rotting roots), and cold temps after a rain so I'll be bidding it farewell soon.

Thanks guys. Kvetch, I am still figuring it out. I can say that I also have a small key lime (thorny) and a calamondin (Lucky, do you want that one?).

I don't bake or cook enough to justify rehoming your key lime but I would love to start using calamondins in my drinks and foods! I'll gladly rehome your calamondin if it is still on the adoption list :)

Jason, the limequats are not sweet at all. They very closely resemble a key lime. I have made many key lime pies with limequats and you can’t tell the difference between those and the ones made with true key limes. Kvetch, I feel that out of fairness, I should give first dibs to lucky because she commented first (for the calamondin). I still have the little key lime and limequat that I still don’t have any takers for....
