Help with range hood color

last modified: 8 years ago

Our kitchen project progress has been at a stand still for the last 7-8 months but we’re trying to ramp up the enthusiasm to finish this thing off!

Before we do the backsplash, I need a decision on a range hood. I do not want stainless and can’t bring myself to spend for an ORB model. So I’ve been leaning towards a wood hood (with a stainless heat shield on the underside). My dilemma is do I try to match the wood in our 10-15 year old cabinets, do I paint it to match the tile backsplash, or do a combination?

My range is 30” and I plan on doing a 36” hood which will leave 4.25” on either side between the hood and cabinets. I plan on tiling all the way to the ceiling (up until a few minutes ago I was going to do large format white subway....)

My in progress kitchen....

We’re not fans of stainless overall so when the range is replaced it will most likely be with white (also looking for any recommendations for a white induction range less than $3k)

A few inspiration pics, I can’t seem to get them to attach to the original post

I like the shape of this one, thinking maybe do the panels white with trim stained to match cabinets?

This picture has a hood that mostly matches the backsplash, but has trim the cabinet color at top and bottom, also like the curved shape a bit better than the boxy one above.

I don’t necessarily mind the way stainless is incorporated in this one. My husband is handy enough to do something like this with either stainless or a (faux) ORB

I would do something painted white. Have you considered a regular old microhood?

This depends on your budget. The first thing that comes to my mind is copper or a combo of wood with some copper banding. Here are some ideas.

I would figure out hood first then backsplash. I would want some contrast with your stove. Perhaps slate.

Thank you for the input! I was originally thinking to paint it white, but I read in another post comments on cleaning the painted white which made me second guess that idea.

The tiles in the picture are just taped on to help me visualize, we haven’t purchased anything yet.

Id like to keep the hood below $1,500; I have a hard time justifying more than that for a hood.

Id rather not do a microwave over the range, I like the idea of having that space somewhat open, plus my husband already did the work in the attic to properly vent the hood outside.

Flo, thanks for the idea. BethH actually made the suggestion of the dark backsplash in a different post, it wasn’t something I had considered. Our kitchen is about 12’x12’, there isn’t much backsplash but there are also no windows directly in the space so I originally wanted to keep it light. But the dark might be a pretty contrast.

I would not try to match the backsplash...too much white is too much white. Maybe you can have the hood just slightly darker than the cabinets.

If you are going to add a hood, it must have an exhaust fan which sends smells and fumes outside through the wall or the roof. Houzz has an article on "how to choose a stove vent hood". Houzz also sells hoods.

I ended up staining a wood hood to match my cabinets. My cost was about $1000 for 30" hood, vent insert and install, but I stained the hood myself. Mine is on the vintage side - actually planned it that way to go with the kitchen. It comes in various wood species and sizes - as do many unfinished hoods. It has a metal liner and I went with the Broan 390 vent insert. I wanted to avoid make up air and I have an average, ordinary 30 inch range. I thought about painting mine white, even covered it with white paper once, but for now I am leaving it. My kitchen is oak, so I ordered an oak hood - thus the grain, and the wooden decal is part of the vintage thing - it came separate and can be removed, plus there are other styles altogether. Mine does exhaust to the outside, though there is a recirculating insert available too - but that is not much good compared to a true vent.
