Luna hibiscus

I had three of these supposed to be the hardy kind.

I planted one in the ground and kept two in pots inside in my root celler over winter.

the one in the ground hasnt even started turning green yet on the stalks. It is on south side of house. The two in pots i moved to a south window in late feb. they still had green stalks. I set the two in pots pots outside now.

When should the one in the ground start showing signs of life? Are they late to come up? Do they grow up from the ground or grow on the stalks?

Ive never planted one in the ground before. But i was told that it was for my z4.

Your zone is 4? I am 5b. Hardy hibiscus are VERY late to come up. Every year, I think they are dead. Every year, they show up. They grow straight up from the roots underground. Last year's stalks are dead and you can trim them off. I leave them just to mark the spot until I see new shoots. I have Luna red and 2 other varieties.

Follow up on my luna hibs.

the one in the ground, actually it was a 3 in 1, it is starting to get new growth. So it made it through the winter in z4.

The ones in pots, i had set out were green stems when i put them outside, now are brown. no signs of green growth on them....

You are ahead of me! Nothing on my 3 in the ground, in zone 5b. I have never tried overwintering any in pots, so can't comment on those. FWIW, I did plant 2 in the ground in the fall, and those did not make it. So I think early season planting is best for these.

I put this one in the ground in aug or september i think. I am surprised it made it through winter. I only put about 6 “ of leaves over it. Its on south side of house. I put one in the pot in the ground. See if it does anything?

Mine are usually a bit late, and I'm in NC. This is the first time in 4 years that mine are going to bloom, I think it just takes them a bit of time to get settled in.

Did you grow yours from seed or buy potted plants? Mine were good foot tall plants when i got them. I give mine the 30-15-30 fertilizer every two weeks. They do well on it. Bloomed last year.

Luna showed up 3 weeks ago, the other 2 finally showed up last week, growing like weeds now. Luna is always earlier than the other 2 more exotic varieties. (Midnight Marvel is one) .

My ros bush isnt even getting buds on it yet. This is its 3rd year. The main stem is green and some branches are green, but alot of them are brown. Im wondering if i should trim off the branches. Last year it was budded out in may.. thought it would be growing by now.

my ros are getting there - the big ones are buried under passion vine - i have to clear it out, some of the cuttings are budding up nicely.

I think i grew a cutting from my pink flamingo. I had cut off a stem that was growing outwards from the plant. It had buds on it. I thought i wld stick it in some dirt and see what happens. Never been able to root from a cutting before. I just set it on east side of house, and its been about a month now. We have been getting alot of rain! Growing like crazy!
