They might work, but I don't save my grocery bags. That would be a good use for them, though. Maybe I'll try it next year. I saw a You Tube video that used paper bags, but they had to put two staples in each bag. It worked, but putting in the staples would be hard for me. I'm disabled, and have a lot of trouble with manual things. Pulling the drawstrings is pretty easy. And the organza bags are easier than the netting I bought last year. I kept getting tangled up in the netting when I was taking it down, and I think it didn't prevent birds or rabbits or other animals from getting them first.

Plastic etc will cause them to rot. The industry standard right now uses glossy finished thin custom-made paper bags. They have the corners slited to allow water to escape, and a kind a metal twist tie at the top to secure it to the branch. They can be difficult to put on properly.

I had crows or something ripping the bags open, so I bought heavy blue nylon weave bags from the dollar store with a drawstring, And put them over top of the paper bags. Works so far.

I didn't realize there was an "industry standard". I guess protecting crops is a big business. Rot makes sense. Have to avoid that. Slit corners. I haven't seen any crows around yet. We'll see.

Patti I have used a product called Bird Scare. It comes on a roll like masking tape but is shinny like xmas tinsel. Tie it on in long strips were you need it then untie and save for next year. We rotate it from fruit tree to tree then use it on the grapes. Don't leave it on when no longer needed they will get use to it. HD or lowes also Warners in Flag.

If the organza bags don't work this year, I might try it...thank you. Several of the bags got blown off with the wind we had a couple of days ago. I think rabbits or something else got the lower bunches last year.

I can’t do the bags, I’d need thousands and thousands of them. lol I am wondering if shiny ribbons could work on grapes, I use that for furit trees. I will tie some ribbons on grapes this weekend.

It is drought. Lack of water this year is keeping my grapes from developing, and a lot of grapes dried up before getting very big, and the bags blew off with very small grapes inside. I asked my yard guy to increase the water (even the old established roses aren't blooming). The bags are easy for me to put on. I'm disabled, so can't do a lot of things.

Just curious - are the organza bags keeping out the birds? I'm starting to lose grapes to birds so I need a solution... Thank you!

I decided to try them because of positive reviews I read online. But I live in a pretty windy area, so the wind blew a lot off. Plus, the drought hampered growth and development. Last year must not have been so dry. I had several clusters of grapes develop fully. This year, nothing is developing or blooming. The bags were pretty easy to put on. Last year, I put on netting. It was hard to put on, and hard to take off. I'm disabled, so it has to be easy to handle. Maybe I put them on too early. I'd try them. I'll try them next year, but I won't put them on so soon.

If you are losing grapes now, it won’t hurt to tie the ribbons now.
