Meiwa Kumquats have a very limited number of rootstocks that it can be grafted to. No one in the USA grafts to those compatible rootstocks. Most Meiwa trees end up dyeing or barely growing or fruiting.

According to that, trifoliate should be ok, if not the ideal. I guess I could email Logee's to see what they graft their Meiwa onto.

You NEED it! Lol. Honestly, don’t waste your time with a Nagami. The Meiwa is very good. I tried one from my tree this winter and actually ate a few...something I’ve never done before with a kumquat. I had a Fukushu and it did not taste as good, although it was about as big.

Pike carries them- do you have one local to you? Their source was Saxon Becnel, not sure what rootstock they usually use. Mine suffered massive branch dieback last winter - the worst of all my plants :(

Harris used to carry meiwa and nagami. I assumed they would be listed again come spring, but it appears not. Stan also used to have them, I guess you have to contact him to check stock.

Sorry to hear that about your tree, Hibiscus. My two kumquats died from severe branch dieback. I have no plans to buy another kumquat after that, but I saved seeds from the Marumi and Nagami and planted them. So now I have young seedlings growing from their own roots. We shall see how they do in the future.

I've got another meiwa that didn't drop a leaf or have any dieback. But it also didn't produce fruit last season. I'm glad I got 2 each of nagami and meiwa, because of the risk of dieback/graft failure.
