Remove granite backsplash or not?
We are renovating our kitchen and we are going to replace the backsplash with this glass mosaic tile:
The problem is that the tile is rather thin. I think it's about 1/16", possibly 3/32":
So we originally wanted to remove the 3-4" granite backsplash and do the new tile from counter to cabinet. However, our contractor is saying if we remove the granite backsplash, there may be gaps that this very thin tile cannot fill. But it seems we can't really know for sure until we remove the backsplash...
- Is it too risky to remove the backsplash with this thin tile?
- If I look at the granite backsplash and don't see any gaps between the backsplash and the wall, is it safe to assume there won't be any gaps between the counter and the wall?
- Perhaps we could put some kind of thin backing on the wall to bring the tile slightly forward?
- We also have an inset desk and butler's pantry / counter to consider, those actually have to be flush on all 3 sides rather than just one which seems even more risky.
- They have to remove the drywall anyway because it is damaged from the old tile backsplash, perhaps we can use a 5/8" drywall instead?
We are considering just keeping the granite backsplash at this point, mostly out of confusion more than anything else. In that case the new tile would go from the top of the granite to the cabinets. Open to any advice and suggestions.

Hmm, OK. Will have to find a tile setter in my area and get a quote or two.
This is the backsplash, floor, cabinet (light color) and wall (dark color) all together. Unfortunately I don't have a photo like this on the black countertop (we haven't moved in yet so this was taken at our current house).
