Help! Problems with insurance company

This is a long story, but I'm going to keep it as brief as possible. We had a roof leak and suffered water damage to our drywall and floors. Unfortunately, water also got under our kitchen floor and we began noticing the cabinets warping and the veneer buckling on the bottom of doors.

We've had a professional restoration company measure the moisture under the floor, and determined that this caused the damage. But our insurance company now claims this was due to installation issues.

The cabinets have been there since the house was built about 30 years ago with no issues before this. The insurance company has had inspectors out to our house at least five times since we signed with them years ago, and never raised any issues about the cabinets, or claimed there any problems before this. How can they now claim we're not covered? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hire an independant adjuster, so you have an advocate working for you.

Agree with millworkman's comment. I very much regret not doing so. Insurance companies are in business to make money; the less they pay out, the more money they make.

What does an independent adjustor do, and why does the ins. co. have to listen to anything they say? Genuinely curious.

A Public Aduster is often an ex insurance adjuster that has “jumped the fence” and works on the behalf of the client.

We had a fire several years ago and our PA was my hero. He won’t let the insurance company bully you because he knows their tactics.

A lawyer and contractor will work better than a PA. See if your state has any consumer protection laws. In my state "unfair and deceptive business practices" can pay triple damages plus legal costs. A simple "demand letter" is sent outlining the loss and the insurance companies actions.

Guaranteed you will be contacted by an attorney representing the insurance company and he'll be ready to deal if you have been treated unfairly.

Speaking from experience w/ ~$500K loss, had a contractor & expensive lawyer; was bullied by insurance co, so wish I hired a good PA right at the beginning.
