Siberian Bugloss

Hi all:

it’s May 5 here in Northampton, MA. I planted Siberian Bugloss last year in the spring. Partial shade, under a pine tree. Hostas thrive there, as do PMJ (?) rhododendrons and Lilly of the valley. The Bugloss did well all last summer and fall. Great flowers and beautiful foliage. so far, it’s nowhere to be seen. My bleeding heart which I planted nearby at the same time is coming up strong , as are established Lillies of the valley.

Is it too early? Is it gone? What happened to it?

Just give it some more time. It was a pretty cold spring for most and your plant will likely come up when it is ready. Bleeding Hearts and Lily of the Valley are very early risers.

If you are zone 5 you will likely just need to wait a bit longer, but, I've had a Sib. Bug not come back too, but, 2 others have come back, maybe, if it never comes back, and you want to replace, just add some good rich soil there, I personally have never had a Bleeding Heart last more than 1 season for me, so plants can be finicky I guess. My Lily of the Valley is doing great, but, they are pretty easy to grow, I planted 3 bulbs and now there's a whole colony under my Pin oak.
