Need help with basement furniture layout!

We recently updated our little-used walk-out basement, with new carpet, clean walls (removed knotty pine paneling), updated lighting and a fireplace insert for Minnesota winters. We'd like to use the room to watch tv with guests who are staying with us (in the adjacent bedroom).

We need some help with how to arrange furniture with the large fireplace and good visibility to the television.

We also plan to add a bar cart or storage to hold glasses, water, etc. for us and our guests.

The furniture in the room will be replaced, and the large black metal pieces are for a workbench that will go in another room.

Our style is Room & Board, Crate & Barrel.

Will you be having a tv in this room and, also, will the fireplace have a mantle?

Yes there will be a tv. My husband would like something around 60-65 inches. We hadn’t thought about adding a mantle.

You could have a console to the right of the fireplace to place the TV on or attach it to the wall above the console, although your husband's choice seems a tad large and will look out of scale to everything else. For balance you could have a bookcase of a similar height on the left of the fireplace, or you could have your bar setup there. The coffee table seems too delicate for this environment. I would get a larger square or rectangular wooden one. I would add a chair to the other side of the couch for more seating, and would consider replacing the couch for a slightly larger one in a brighter color, perhaps picking one of the colors from the chair. If you could get the same chair for the other side that would be great. I would consider whitewashing the fireplace since the red color is a little strong. Some large pieces of art on all that wall area would add warmth and livability. A rustic coffee table with the top painted yellow and the legs gray like the stripes in your chair would be fun. Drapes in a solid cream color would give added softness to the room without having a distracting pattern that you don't need.

Thanks, Ingrid. We will for sure replace the glass-topped table. We have a blind dog(not the one pictured) and it is too hard-edged for her to be around.

Would you center the couch in front of the fireplace? Or move it move in front of where you are suggesting the tv go?

So here’s what I would suggest. The room is quite narrow so take advantage of the length. This may be too much sectional but it will help to balance out things and help with tv viewing. Don’t put the tv above the fireplace because your room is so narrow you will have to tilt your head back to see it lol. Definitely use an articulating arm so you can tilt and swivel the tv toward the seating area. Take some painters tape and mark out the seating on the floor so that you have sizes before you go shopping. Want to leave 3’-0” behind the sectional for a walkway.

Thanks, Nancy. I like the layout. How would you handle lighting with the pass-through behind the sectional?

Recessed if possible. If you can’t get access, then I would do a wall sconce(s) that gives you uplighting as well as down.

Good idea. We put recessed lighting in with the update but it is quite bright so sconces might support more of a mood feel.

    Thanks again.
