As mentioned health problem is likely to be bugs sucking out the needles and making them drop prematurely, this kind gets them all the time in my part of USDA 8.

With that box right there it will have to be something pretty small growing. As in smaller even than the box, so the planting tapers down to the end of the bed. And the box has enough room to expand.

Andy, if you are just wanting to know the names of possible replacements it's a plant question, not a design question. You are better off staying here on Shrubs or going over onto Trees. The Landscape forum is about design and layout rather than plant choice. Although people do post over there for recommendations most of the knowledgeable plantspeople are not on that forum.

but it looks like you just have a bunch of old large green blobs.. the usual suspects ... planted close to the house.. for the small plants they were at purchase.. and in the ensuing decades.. have been sheared to within an inch of their lives.. once or twice a year ...

if that is right.. based on what little i can see ... then you ought to think about a long term plan to replace them all ... no need to do it all at once ...

all that said.. out on the corner o the house.. how about a japanese maple in red ....

a sawzall.. with a tree blade.. will help you dig this one out ...
