Kitchen Needs Updating! please Help!

Hello Everyone,

My husband and i have recently bought our first home and the one design dilemma i am having is the kitchen and nook area. The washer and dryer are in the same area to the right.

Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you!

It already looks lovely. What are you hoping to achieve from the new design?

I feel it's boring, i might paint and add a backsplash, i will be updating the cushion color and adding a round table to the nook. That's all i have thought of so far

See if you can remove the 4" backsplash already there . Then add a complete backsplash and repaint the rest of the area. Maybe new flooring if that is in the budget?

    Thank you!!

If this was my kitchen I would eventually replace the over the range micro with a vent and get a stainless range. If it was in the budget, I would do hardwood floors. The floor you have is fine, I just like hardwood.

I really like your cabinets. When I look at your kitchen I feel like it is close to the size of mine and I have a small island, but when I look at your space, I don't think it would fit. I guess my kitchen is a little wider.

It will be less boring when you add your own style. That depends on what you like. I have a vintage style - you might want a totally different look.

Pics of my kitchen are in my "my pics" idea book.

If you do not have under cabinet lighting, consider it. It is the best thing I added.

You can get a high-quality, modern look for a lot less than
you might think with adhesive tiles that normally come in 1 sq. ft. sizes that
you can cut down to fit. From mosaic tile, glass, stone, gel, skinny to stone –
check out some ideas here. It’s unique, less expensive because it’s easy to
install yourself and come in an array of styles https://www.houzz.com/projects/1262017/kitchen-backsplash

Congratulations! I really like your cabinets.. and that’s coming from someone who is usually drawn to white.

The first thing I noticed was the cabinet hardware. I think changing that out would make a HUGE difference in this case!

And like others mentioned- new backsplash without 4” piece. Something somewhat reflective (like glass or ceramic subway tiles) to brighten it up a little.

SS Appliances would really update it if/when that is in the budget

I agree that it needs a new backsplash and maybe paint a different color! The backsplash will add character and color! Excited to see more pics!

You can give it an easy update with new paint, hardware, cushions, and a round table. Taking out the existing backsplash piece and adding a new tile backsplash would be nice as well. I would keep using your appliances if they are in good shape but would eventually replace them with stainless. I would actually keep the microwave where it is. It looks like it is high enough for you to use your stove, and you do not have very much counter space.

The light should be updated to something a bit more modern, cabinets look good maybe just a solid paint job on them will be sufficient.

It looks like an easy update would be to change all appliances to SS, remove the 4" backsplash and put in your own, paint, and add new hardware to the cabinets.

Paint does wonders. If you like the mid tone cabinets great...then a new splash in something lighter will brighten it up. You can also paint or have painted the cabinets to make them more fresh and bright.

Have you considered using a stainless steel or aluminum metal mosaic tile to achieve a brighter and engaging look to your kitchen space? Or even real copper tiles? You could extend the tiles to the washer and dryer area to bring the spaces together. We invite you to check out these kitchens and laundry areas and our selection of tiles to give you some ideas.

Congrats on the new home. My first suggestion: I would make some simple/inexpensive changes before doing anything dramatic. Paint walls Benjamin Moore/White Dove, baseboards. and window trimmings with BM/White Cloud. I would also change the cushions to pleather in off white, simple to do yourself & shouldn't cost you more than $40.00. If you have some time, and little patience, you might want to also consider staining your current cabinets a richer/espresso tone, and change out the hardware on the cabinet doors.

Definitely change the cushions. I would also brighten up the room by painting the cabinets white. The wood makes the room look smaller than it is. They would also benefit from updated hardware.

I think the cabinets would look amazing in white as would painting the room a new color!
