Blueberries should do ok there if your soil pH is in the right range (4.5 - 5.5), though berry yield may be significantly less than it would be if they were planted in full sun. some type of Rabbit Eye variety would be most regionally appropriate, it is best to plant at least 2 varieties to promote cross pollination.

I'd stick with viburnums but try one of the native species. Most are tolerant of less than full sun (much more so than blueberries), do not require any specific soil conditions other than decent drainage and are far less water-hungry. And they all produce berries that are attractive to birds and other wildlife, as well as attracting pollinators and are host plants to various butterflies and moths.

They also have very attractive flowers and most develop stunning fall color.

Blueberries would work, rabbiteyes will do well in your area you can keep them pruned at 6' tall

Gardengal, thanks for the suggestions. Been thinking of Arrowwood viburnum, inkberry, and maple leaf viburnum. Have decided to wait until Fall so I can study options more--and for better chances of the shrubs surviving.

How about currants? In European orchards they are grown as understory shrubs, and they would work with 4 hours of sun. And they are not picky about growing conditions. I have a 6-7' tall blackcurrant shrub planted in the SW corner of my fenced yard where nothing else would grow. I planted it for myself, but birds devour the fruit just before it reaches full ripeness and leave me nothing. So I net my blueberries and let them have the currants...
