Mark property lines without upsetting neighbor

Neighbor and I each own large parcels in mountain country. We share a common properly line that runs down the center of a old logging road (no longer in use).

Wondering what my options are for marking the property line in a manner that will be distinct without being offensive.

I mentioned fence, and he doesn't like that. I'm a bit of a loss. He enjoys roaming my property, which I would rather he not do, so I would like to install a distinct property boundary to discourage him from doing so. Also I plan on inviting guests to my property and would like them to see the boundary clearly, so my guests aren't roaming his property.

Picture below shows property line. It's long (over 1000') so whatever I use to mark has to be really cheap.

Is he paying your property tax? Otherwise if worried about appearing angry or confrontational put up signs that say something comparatively toneless like Property Boundary (rather than Keep Out, No Trespassing or even Private Property). Then nobody can claim ignorance - you are merely informing the neighbor (and anyone else who might come along) of where the line is, as a follow up to your previous discussion. A follow up where you continue to assert your property rights, instead of "he doesn't like that" being allowed to decide the direction of things. After that, if he continues to come on your place without permission talk to a lawyer.

And if additional, more aggressive antisocial tendencies start to emerge in reaction to you putting your foot down then you'll just have to involve law enforcement. So far you are, in effect letting this guy walk on you via him continuing to walk on your land. Something he clearly thinks he is entitled to do.

How do you feel about a series of 3-4 foot tall “posts” (for lack of a better word)? Almost like thick brick/stone pillars that would anchor a rail fence, but don’t put in the fence. The spacing between them might depend on budget, but they would be close enough ((25 feet)) so there was no mistaking the border. They could be made out of whatever stone is local and fits with the area. Could even place a low profile solar powered light on top of each for night time viewing.

The word I was looking for was “column”. I don’t know how to capture and post pictures for threads so I created an ideabook on my folders marked “stone columns”.

‘He enjoys roaming my property...’?? Ummm no. Sounds like you are trying to keep him happy, keep the peace maybe ? you will only start resenting him. He can’t stop you from installing a fence as long as you pay for it and it is just on your side of the property line . It doesn’t have to be a full fence, just a clear delineation of what is yours and what is his.

Can you plant a hedge?

I would tell a frequent trespasser that it would cause you an insurance issue to allow people on the property without permission, and you can mention that your lawyers gave you some kind of legalese reason. And, you can install some cameras aimed right down that road. You can tell him they're for the wildlife, or whatever.

Your problem won’t be cured by marking the line with posts. May be made worse by a fence. Good luck.

Grow some rose ramblers, a tall thorny wall.......Kitftsgate can grow into a 50' monster, you just need to buy a few, and you could root more later. it's breathtaking when it's covered with millions blooms......it might become a wedding photo spot though. There are many other monster ramblers too, you could do different ramblers.......Gardenia (rose rambler) and mme.
