Ex , check out Dirt Trackers comments on the Toolshed forum . He recently 1 yr ago purchased a Predator 301 Model 8 HP engine , during his 1st oil change servicing , he noticed silver metallic particles in the used oil . Cam Wear or normal break in residual particulate ?

ssewalk1, no idea. What persuaded me was I have one of those on a Generac 3750W Genset, had it for about ten years and it's been a workhorse when we have outages. My own personal break in sequence is straight 30W and run at variying speeds for about 20 minutes. Drain while hot, then fill with 5W-30 Synthetic and that's all they ever see afterwards. Time will tell.

• Yep that break in policy is what I have always adhered to also. I run 20-50 Syn in my larger Gen Sets and 5-30 Syn also in my smaller units , that only run auxiliary lighting @ hunt & fish camps . As said previously , they look good on paper , perhaps a one off incident , I advised him of the appropriate grade synthetic oil for his region & application accordingly .

FWIW, mounted the engine, completed the welding, connected everything up. Started first pull, seems to run good. If garden wasn't a sea of mud, would take it for a test spin. When I drained the break in oil, noticed some small aluminum crap. Looked to me like where they drilled and tapped the oil drain through the base of the engine. Time will tell on the engine. I love it when I can take "old iron" and bring it back to life! This is a 72 JD worm gear drive tiller, weighs a ton does a great job in the garden AND not in the junk yard.
