I'm fortunate I have enough room on my property to have a very large fenced-in area for a veggie garden; I located my fruit trees and bushes in this fenced-in area. DH attached chicken wire to wooden pasture fencing that was already there, it's about 6' high, and he buried the chicken wire about a foot deep to deter critters from digging their way in. Yea, I know the deer can still jump a 6' fence, but I'm not putting up 8' fence - that's an eyesore to me.

Before I added chicken wire to the tops of my chain link around the entire back yard (attached with stakes and zip ties, taking the height to 7 ft -- temporary until I get the fencing replaced with something attractive), I used 4' wire fencing around the cluster of trees -- far enough away that the deer couldn't reach over to nibble, but close enough that they didn't have room to jump. They do need landing space to jump, so depending on how your trees are situated you might not need to have the fence so very tall. One of my neighbors has narrow beds and 5" fencing; the narrow but longer rectangles don't give them landing space. Mine are in pots and clustered together, to the same effect.

What I need to do is contrive a fully covered/netted enclosure to keep the raccoons from stealing the fruit!
