Barn Door Dilemma

Hello,

My husband and I are nearing completion of our first ever reno. And like many other first timers, we didn't think this one through completely!

Our bedroom door is at the end of our hallway. As you walk into the room, to the immediate right is a small walk way into our walk in robe. The issue we are now having is what door to put on.

I 100% do not want it to open into the hallway. If we have it open to the left, it will sit on the wall where our tv will be, so not ideal. If it opens to the right, It will close off access to the wardrobe. I'm thinking this is the best bet. It will be annoying having to open and close the door all the time to get to the wardrobe though.

So, I was wondering if anyone has used a barn door style on a bedroom? Hubby is worried about noise and light etc when we are trying to sleep. I suggested a sliding cavity door, but he's not keen to redo the wall, plaster etc to accommodate that.

If I understand, you are asking about the main door to the bedroom, not to the closet. Your husband is correct about the light and the noise. Also, the barn door is not as quiet to open and close, making it difficult to enter or exit the room while the other person is sleeping. I agree that moving the bedroom door to the hall, just about where the letter “L” is on your drawing would solve the door swing issue.

Maybe a pivot door would be the answer, they can also be mirrored

Why not back the doorway into the hall a few feet? It looks like there is room. That would even make the bedroom seem bigger.

I made barn doors for my bedroom closet and the noise is not loud. the hardware rolls smoothly and quietly.. There are also padded accessories that help reduce they're opening and closing process.

When using a barn door on any opening, you must have a bare section of wall where the door will stand when it is "open". That means you won't have a piece of furniture or art on that section of your wall.

Why not?

Are you just desperate to have a “neat” door instead of a regular, old-fashioned hinged door? If so, don’t be shy about saying so. If not, then I think you have two options: 1.) move the entrance into the hallway like Guy suggested*, or, 2.) have the door swing out into the hallway.

*This is how one of my bedrooms is set up, and again, like Guy said, it does give the room a grander feeling.

I would not put a barn door on a bedroom. They just aren’t great as a light and noise barrier. Move the door down into the hallway.
