Help! Gallery Wall input

last modified: 8 years ago

I'm looking for feedback on the gallery wall below (yea, nay, suggestions for improvements - pieces to remove, types of pieces to add, etc.). Would prefer not to add a mirror based on the space (wouldn't be reflecting anything of interest).

Living room pictured is real, gallery is a mock up. Will be adding furniture (side table, etc.) and plants on on either side of the couch so won't be as bare as pictured (for anyone feeling ambitious, suggestions welcome there, too). Thanks!

Yes, go with this gallery wall!
I don't think this works

Layout is great, I would add a bit more blue and grey to tie in your furniture (love the sofa!). Try replacing the two black and white pieces with something in more blue/grey. Then tie in that fantastic pop of orange in the center with some pillows in the sofa or coffee table decorations.

    You're on the right track!

The one element throwing the layout off is having just one side of the gallery wall unaligned. The suggestion would be to give at least two sides an irregular line or hang the artwork in a way which offers a straight line for each side.

    Happy hanging!

I'm not a huge fan of gallery walls (unless maybe along a stairwell or in a hallway) because I think they look too busy. I think one large piece of art would look more dynamic. Pretty room.

Do you already own this art and you're looking for the best way to display, or is this art you're going to buy specifically for this wall?

Thanks for the feedback thus far! To answer Lindsey's question, I currently own two of the pieces but not sharing which :) as I'm not tied to any pieces (the ones owned could be used elsewhere) and am more focused on getting a great outcome.

Also important to note that I'm not tied to a gallery wall but my SO is, so that much is fixed. Thanks!

You've done a good job on the layout. The only change I would make is to tighten it up a bit.

OK, one more suggestion. If this is the actual wall they are going on, I wouldn't use any white frames.

Very nice layout. I think you did great. How do you feel about an exposed hanging wire from the top outermost pictures? For color I would do a large brass or ceramic pot with a tall variegated green plant like mother-in- Law's Tongue, Sansevieria Laurentii. You could stack some oversized throw pillows on the floor in the other (right) corner. Love the color palette mentioned by Jamie Ludwig for pillow inspiration.

Looks good, left corner of your room a bit empty tho, maybe a place for a large plant?

The only thing that bothers me is the upper left. I would like that picture to be 3 or 4 inches wider so the left vertical is aligned. I like everything else.

The only piece I'm not too keen on in this grouping is the landscape, upper left corner. It seems too earnest and nostalgic for the rest, which are maybe more playful and irreverent and are abstract.

But I should disclose that I know very little about art other than Monet, van Gogh, Degas, and "I like it"/"I don't like it" :-D Oh, and Picasso of course!

Everybody has a different opinion. The picture that seems lost to me is the one on the bottom left, as it has the least contrast with the wall color. I would switch it with the one to its right. I think the white mat on that one (bottom center-left) will provide a better defined left edge for the grouping, more in line with the other pieces on the left and right edges of the group.

jbhillinois, any progress on the gallery wall? Looks like the vote was evenly split. I like larger pieces. You could go outside the boundaries of your couch and come down the wall on the left since you have space to fill there. Here's more inspiration:

Whoops - one more idea I wanted to share. I love this and doing it this way might even mean less holes overall in the brick wall?

I like it. Agree with the suggestion to tighten it up a bit. But overall, interesting.

I like the gallery idea and am trying to do it for my mother above her couch. It helped me to see yours. I agree with the ideas above that the pictures would look better a little closer together and that the white mats would be better less white (cream?). They pop against the wall so it is the mat I notice instead of the picture.
